Wellbutrin SR/XL -- What are the differences?? Is SR generic? I'm confused about these different formulations of Wellbutrin. Several years ago, Wellburin SR/150mg was prescribed for me; and I bought it (through my insurance) at the price of a generic ($5 copay). Now a friend of mine has a for SR -- and it seems that there is no generic product available. Anybody know the answer here; as well as the difference between SR and XL Thank you very much in advance! Ragarding a coupe of the given answes so far: (and thank you!!!!!!)...but" SR does not stand for "Standard Release" - it stands for either Sustained or Slow Release" I do know that much ...... Is there a "real" functional difference between Smith Glaxo Klein's eXended Release Wellbutrin and the generic Sustained Release Buproprion....BTW-- I know the difference between generic and name-brand drugs; I am trying to determine is XR (name brand) and SR (generic) are really functionally different. But, with all due respect, the Answer stating that SR means "Standard Release" -- I believe is incorrect. SR means "Sustained Release to my knowlege." But thank you very much Freelancenut!!!!!!!!!!!!........!!!!!

paramedic michael replied: "welbutrin sr is the standard release form and the xl is the timed release"

freelancenut replied: "Wellbutrin SR is the standard-release form, and XL is the one you only have to take once a day. Look at your friend's again. There is a generic form, but it goes by the generic name "bupoprion". See if the allows substitution--probably under the doctor's signature. If it doesn't, they will have to call their doctor to get it changed."

psychgrad replied: "Sustained vs. extended release. Wellbutrin SR lasts for a shorter time. You have to take it twice a day. Wellbutrin XL slowly releases medication throughout the day, so you only have to take it once a day. There is a generic for Wellbutrin SR but not XL."

angelle_76 replied: "SR stands flow slow release which means that the medication is slowly released into your body throughout the day eventually maintaining a constant level in yor bloodstream. The term generic means same drug just sold and made by a different company than the people who actually first invented the medication.Hope this helps some."

what is the difference between wellbutrin xl and wellbutrin sr? I had been taking wellbutrin xl 150 mg and it did wonders. I do not have insurance now and am looking to buy wellbutrin online. SR is cheaper. If I get wellbutrin sr 150 how much of a difference is that than taking xl. Thanks so much!

What is the difference between Wellbutrin XL and SR? Can both be used for the same purposes? What is the difference between Wellbutrin XL and SR? Can both be used to treat the same things? I have also read that Wellbutrin at 400 mg can be used to treat obesity. Does this apply to both Wellbutrin XL and SR?

brenda_clovis b replied: "I was recently switched from wellbutrin to budeprion. I find that the generic made me very nauseous and anxious. My body might be having a reaction to the filler used in the pill, or the fact that it is not coated. I will be asking my doctor to switch me back on the name brand. Although many people may claim that the generics are the same, there are differences. Each persons body reacts differently to drugs and if you are finding yourself with problems than there is no reason why you should not request to be allowed to stay on the name brand. If you want to read more people's opinions about this drug go to"

fiVe replied: "Wellbutrin SR and XL are fundamentally the same medication used for the same purposes. What's different is the pill's composure because SR breaks down and is absorbed more quickly, so you need to take it twice a day. The XL variation is made to be even longer extended release so you only need to take it once a day."

l jude replied: "SR means sustained release so a constant consistent dose of the medication will be released over the time that you tool it."

Is there a big difference between wellbutrin sr and the wellbutrin xl? Hi, I was taking wellbutrin xl and was swtiched to bupropian SR to save money, well I feel more anxious and wonder if the generic is the reason. I also did not feel so anxious on the wellbutrin, but maybe it's all in my mind?

loki_only1 replied: "Nope... the difference is the way the xl is released... its a slow and steady release (xl you only take once a day). the SR you (should) have to take twice a day. In the time in between pill A and pill B - you might be having a moment of limited amounts in your blood stream. Try equally spacing your doses (every 12 hours)... i used to take mine at 9 am&pm."

what is difference between wellbutrin SR/XL? i told my doc i wanted to try teh XL-- he said there was no difference between SR/XL but why do they make both? an whatis teh difference between budpropion and bupropion hcl it looks like sr is 12 hour and xl is 24 hour whose right--me--or teh guy with the medical degree i gave you teh names of the drugs__IN MY COUNTRY--- if you can't figure taht out--i doubt you can answer teh question

Shane-o replied: "What country do you live in? Drugs are called different things depending on country"

Kay replied: "SR (sustained release) and XL (extended release) mean the same thing. in regards to the 2 drugs you are referring to budpropion and bupropion hcl they are the same thing they just come in different strengths. the different strengths have different brand names and are used mainly for different reasons. XL and SR are being used to distinguish one from another. Zyban - Mainly used to help people stop smoking and Wellbutrin - for anxiety and depression. Wellbutrin also comes in a normal release and an extended release"

Generic Wellbutrin SR vs Wellbutrin XL ( Have access to both) Difference? And has which one helps with lbs? Okay, was prescribed Bupropion HCI (SR) this time around, but I usually take Wellbutrin XL the pharmacist told me they're both taken twice a day, and they're basically the same. But, was just wondering if those who have taken the generic saw any differences, and if there was any weight loss accompanied with SR.

texjeff111 replied: "Wellbutrin XL is normally taken once daily and the the SR is taken twice daily. Again the word normally is important. Some patients require additional doses of either due to their medical condition or metabolism."

Wellbutrin XL/ SR weight loss difference? I started taking Wellbutrin XL (150 mg) five days ago to help with depression and weight loss. But I am not positive my doctor had the best of knowledge about whether Wellbutrin XL or SR would be more likely to contribute to weight loss. So I want to find out which one is better in terms of weight loss goal, so that I can switch before my body gets used to the XL. Thanks! oh wow ya'll are so quick and helpful. um i took Lexapro and occasionally xanax (only when needed) for a year and it caused me to gain 15 pounds, which did not help with my depression. So I gradually came off of it, didn't take anything for 4 months and now i'm starting Wellbutrin. i work out every day and watch what i eat. i realize Wellbutrin is not INTENDED for weight loss purposes, but I do know it is part of the off-label use. I just don't know whether the XL or the SR is better

Grenade Jumper replied: "Hmm... I'm taking wellbutrin as well, and I had no idea that it contributes to weight loss. I'd like to find out about this."

duritzgirl4 replied: "XL is supposed to be the one that helps with weight loss, but it really depends upon why the weight was gained to begin with. Wellbutrin XL helps control obsessive or addictive behavior - doctors prescribe it for people who want to stop smoking as well. If you eat compulsively, then this may help you lose weight. If you don't eat that much anyway, but you have a low activity level or just make bad eating choices, it may not help you as much. Good luck."

Ladyofathousandfaces replied: "you really need to go back to your doctor on that, cause they work different on each person. But you have only been on it for five days, and that is not time enough to tell if it is going to help you gain weight, or loss weight. So you are really getting worried about something that you have not given time to even work, you know they do not make mircle pills, or a mircle wand, so you have to be more patient and see if it is going to work. After all you doctor is the one that went to Medical school, and had to learn all that, plus keep up on all the medications as they come out, so if you don't think he is right, then go and see another doctor, but i think that you are worrying way to early and maybe that is why you gain weight, from worrying , so you eat. So go and see you doctor about this problem."

Have you had better results with Wellbrutrin XL or Wellbutrin SR? Because of insurance coverage, I switched from SR to XL, and I am really noticing a difference! The XL is leaving me in a fog! Has anyone had this experience? I feel so tired on this; it makes me think I am depressed more than I am! It seems like everything is more difficult to do because I am so groggy. Will this go away or should I just bite the bullet and pay out of pocket for the SR? I really can't afford either! Thanks for any input. Skye

misty_1128 replied: "When I switched from SR to XL, I didn't see a difference. I think that you should keep for a little longer to see if it goes away."

purplefaerydust replied: "The type of reaction you've described is pretty common in people who've switched from brand-name Wellbutrin to its generic form, Budeprion. So, since you mentioned you switched due to insurance reasons, this makes me wonder if you have actually been taking the generic form since the switch. If so, it might be worth it to switch back to the version you were taking before. If this is not the case, it may be time to talk to your doctor about changing medications or dosages. Hope this helps."
